LG Display presents FLiPP, a new route to manufacturing OLED

The process removes fine metal masks from pixel patterning, with monitors and tablets among its intended first applications.

  • FMM-less OLED pixel patterning
  • Photolithography and whole-substrate processing
  • Initial focus includes tablets and monitors

FLiPP sequentially forms red, green and blue pixels and uses photolithography to remove unwanted material. LG Display says the approach can process an entire 8.5-generation glass substrate instead of dividing it to accommodate fine metal masks.

Under the company’s stated comparison conditions, the process increases brightness by 1.6 times, extends lifespan by 2.4 times and reduces power use by 13%. These are manufacturer development claims, not specifications for an available retail monitor. The August presentation at IMID demonstrates a manufacturing direction and its potential efficiency gains.
